Ok, I know you cant sell open source software. But my question is can you use it to make money? Say I integrate an open source software into my website with slight modification in the code as I require. Can I place ads on the same site and monetize on it? I am not selling the software to anyone, I am just using it as a part of my site to ad value to my users. And the money being generated is not through the software but through the ads.

Yes, it is perfectly legal.
Just as long as your are not selling the software yourself. Its even legal to sell your support of the software.
i mean yah i guess. i mean in that case its just like freeware. its free but the sites obviously have ads so if its really popular im sure you can make money. or you can just say before you donload just look at these ads and just note that you dont have to buy anything just look
To understand the open source concept, you can distribute it freely, you can modify, alter and change it and sell your new version, but you must provide this change for other people to use and modify to suite their needs and requirements. This is part of what open source is all about. You can not sell the original open source code. You have to read the GPL license agreements.
